Thanks brenyboy26. There are a number of different kinds of "trackers" using GPS. There is a standard relatively cheap kind that is quite legal that will fit on a car or vehicle and used as a "recovery" device should you have your vehicle stolen. There are however some "illegal" trackers and the law seems to be a bit quirky on these as with things like X band radar detectors (very illegal). Very simple GPS trackers that just give lat/longitude can be very cheap. (As little as $30) and you can buy them via the internet or search for them on sites like www.alibaba.com or www.made-in-china.com which are websites dedicated to selling products to businesses around the world. There are also small items used by hikers and climbers etc so that they are something like they have on boats to lock on to boats in distress, and the can come in from around $100 up to several thousand dollars.
My business sells basic GPS for hikers etc and you can also buy them at ADVENTURE TREK AND TRAVEL in Townsville, though they are not always in stock. Currently we do not have any in stock because we are at the end of our selling year and we don't go to Shenzhen to purchase again until late December and come back in February. If you would like to give me a basic 'budget' and an idea of what you would want to use it for, I can ask our suppliers what you might expect to pay for these. Chances are that you might also be able to find what you want at a JAYCAR store in Sydney (mail order or website) or at a Dick Smith Powerhouse store. This is not much information but I hope it helps a little.
